MSN Autos says:
The first all-new Porsche in 20 years is a car that recalls the company's roots. Early Porsches were simple, lightweight roadsters—the original 356 and 550 Spyder being the best known. The Boxster captures the spirit of its predecessors, while also incorporating the latest Porsche technology. Its name is a combination of "boxer" (the famous Porsche engine layout) and "roadster," while the shape is the final result of a sketch originally drawn by Porsche designer Grant Larson. A concept-car prototype was built and displayed at the 1993 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, where response from both the automotive media and the public was overwhelmingly positive. The production Boxster is a thoroughly modern car that occupies the entry level of the Porsche model range. The line received additional performance in 2000 with the debut or the more powerful Boxster S.
